Homelessness in Hong Kong is influenced by various factors, including socio-economic conditions, housing affordability, and individual circumstances. Here are five key causes of homelessness in Hong Kong:

High housing costs: Hong Kong has one of the most expensive housing markets globally, with soaring property prices and limited affordable housing options. The high cost of housing makes it challenging for low-income individuals and families to secure stable accommodation, leading to precarious living situations and potential homelessness.

Inadequate social housing supply: The supply of public and subsidized housing in Hong Kong falls short of meeting the demand. Lengthy waiting lists for public housing and limited availability of affordable rental options contribute to homelessness. Many individuals and families face difficulties in accessing suitable housing, particularly those with lower incomes or special needs.

Economic inequality and poverty: Economic inequality in Hong Kong is a significant contributing factor to homelessness. The city's high living costs and income disparities make it difficult for individuals with low wages or unstable employment to afford housing and meet basic needs. Some individuals may experience job loss, financial crises, or family breakdowns, pushing them into homelessness.

Mental health and addiction issues: Homelessness in Hong Kong is often intertwined with mental health challenges and substance abuse issues. Individuals facing mental health disorders or struggling with addiction may have difficulties maintaining stable housing and accessing appropriate support services. The lack of accessible and affordable mental health services exacerbates the risk of homelessness.

Migration and social exclusion: Hong Kong attracts migrants from various regions, including Mainland China and neighboring countries. Some migrants may face difficulties in securing stable housing and employment, leading to homelessness. Social exclusion and discrimination based on factors such as ethnicity or immigration status can further marginalize certain groups, increasing their vulnerability to homelessness.
