Not from textbooks, but in my opinion, to successfully implement the model, social workers must develop key understandings, consider diverse perspectives, and ask critical questions. For example, to know the group’s history of oppression, we have to ask how the oppression originated and how this oppression manifests in the present. To understand the group’s strengths and resilience, we ask how the people have adapted and coped with the oppression and what has allowed the community to survive and succeed in the face of the stress and abuse they’ve encountered. To recognize the diversity within the group, we ask how elements such as race, class, gender, and sexual orientation complicate and change the impact of oppression on different group members and in what ways these factors affect the way oppression plays out.
