This model is a construct with a certain intuitive appeal, bringing the family back in as an active participant in the larger society, an actor responding to, reworking, or reframing external constraints and opportunities. It looks at the dynamic tension between protection and risk along five dimensions: demands (stressors), appraisals (how the family views the situation), social supports (from each other and others outside the family), coping (what a family does about demands), and adaption.
