If the client's vision impairment involves a partial loss of vision, the worker should position herself/himself within the client's area of vision. In the case of clients with peripheral vision only, this may mean sitting directly at the client's side rather than facing him/ her. While the worker may know about the client's vision loss through records or other workers, to position most effectively, it is useful to ask for the client's help. A simple "Can you see me clearly from here?" or "Is this a good place for me to sit?" can help the client feel comfortable asking the worker to sit in a particular spot. When the optimal place for the worker has been determined, position the light source so that you are visible to the client. You will not need to make exaggerated body movements or positions. If the client can see the area where the worker is positioned, the worker's nonverbal communication will be evident to the client.
There will be instances, however, when the vision impairment is such that positioning alone will not resolve the limitations on nonverbal communication. In these cases, it is possible for the worker to partially compensate for the loss of nonverbal communication by using more expressive language in communicating verbally and by checking in with the client frequently to ensure that meaning is accurately interpreted.
