Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are defined as the skills and abilities necessary for independent living, encompassing tasks such as meal preparation, medication management, shopping, and housekeeping. Unlike basic activities of daily living (ADLs), IADLs require more complex cognitive functioning and planning.

To measure IADLs, various assessment tools are utilized, including the Lawton IADL Scale and the Older Americans Resources and Services (OARS) scale. These tools typically involve self-report questionnaires or interviews that evaluate an individual's capability to perform specific IADLs, helping to determine their level of independence and need for assistance in daily life.
