Some children may experience profound psychological effects due to emotional abuse or neglect, beginning in childhood and enduring throughout their adult lives. Children may also experience physical consequences, such as a failure to thrive, or experience non-organic pain, as well as emotional and behavioral symptoms. Generally, children who perceive that they were emotionally neglected are at an increased risk for developing psychiatric symptoms.
