Cognitive development refers to a child's cognitive or intellectual abilities, commonly referred to as intelligence quotient (IQ). A cognitive evaluation assesses what a child can do rather than what he or she is currently achieving. Cognitive abilities generally assessed are a child's problem-solving ability, how a child thinks about or understands his or her world, how and what a child understands what is said to him or her, and how and what a child can communicate to others. The most common cognitive assessment measure for children is the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition. Screening measures are not recommended due to their serious limitations.
