These children discover, through attempts at social interaction and play, that being different adversely affects how other children assess their limitations as well as their playmate and/or friendship suitability. They soon learn that a disability harnesses them with the burden of responsibility for approaching others and making friends. Able-bodied children learn that, although helping people with disabilities is positive, engaging in friendships with them carries significantly greater social risk.
