Dr. Mary Mittleman has developed an evidence-based program to support family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease. The New York University (NYU) Caregiver Counseling and Support Intervention has four components: two individual counseling sessions for each caregiver that are tailored to the individual’s unique situation, family counseling sessions with both the primary caregiver and family members, a weekly support group, and counseling on an “as needed” basis by phone. Her model of intervention has been demonstrated to not only improve the well-being of caregivers but also delay nursing home placement of the care recipients.
