You may consider link juvenile crime reduction, your main targeted outcomes of the program, to promote positive development. According to Mahoney, Larson, Eccles, & Lord (2005), features of afterschool programs that promote positive development include physical and psychological safety, appropriate structure, supportive relationships, opportunities for belonging, positive social norms, support for self-efficacy and mattering, opportunities for skill-building, and integration of family, school, and community. If these factors are present, participation in after-school activities can increase adolescents’ educational achievement, reduce problem behaviors, and heighten psychosocial competencies.
